  • The server is a MSSQL Edition Version >= 2005 with TCP-IP protocol on a supported operating system.
    • (eg MSSQL 2005 Express on Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1)
  • An ODBC Library for Excel - Functions, not only 32Bit (in FFPrep) but also 64Bit (in FFEdge): is contained in MS-Office 64Bit. If you do not have MS Office you can download standalone setups from this server. Sometimes you must first uninstall the MS Office 32Bit. Following MS Office installation is possible. ODBC 64 or ODBC 32
  • For ST10 you need to install View_And_Markup_GERMAN__ST10 (Insight Connect ST10) ( gets the 32Bit funktions for the magnifying glass in FFViewer (using SEDraftX.ocx SEPartX.ocx) and the Filesystemproperties library dll in 32Bit FFPrep.) Beginning with FF7 Version 215 FFPrep will be delivered as 64Bit version.

What to do

  • On the server
    • login with administrator privileges (necessarily as a domain user in the domain)
    • start the setup FF-7.<FFEdgeGuiVersion>.<DBVersion>.<build>.exe
      • If asked for SE installation, abort batch with ctrl c.
    • start FFprep, connect to the database. (Change Server Name: Server name \ SQL instance name).
      • The Create button is sharp!
    • Create the database.
      • Select a directory for the database files (DLM_SE_dat.mdf and DLM_SE_log.ldf, ~ 150MB).
    • Configure (possibly stop and restart FFPrep)
      • choose to be watched directories
      • choose the directory of the License File
        • the file will be inserted into the database. A License will be checked by reading the database.
      • creating user
        • least one user in the administrators group
        • under domain: if domain use the domain name, if workgroup use name of the SQL server
        • the existence of the user is checked
        • tip: a user can be selected and copied, its settings are copied too.
  • on the workplaces
    • start the setup FF-7.<FFEdgeGuiVersion>.<DBVersion>.<build>.exe
    • start FFprep, connect to the database. (Change Server Name: Server name \ SQL instance name).
      • Note: This connection is saved separately for each login
        • at registry HKEYCurrentUser/Software/CF Computer/FastFinder
      • Tip: export registry keys from FastFinder and import them on the workplaces
  • On a workplace
    • Add documents to the database as Fast Finder administrator
      • Note: SolidEdge must be installed.

Updates / Remove

In contrast to the previous versions (<6) an uninstall is no longer necessary to update. Setup detects the previously set parameters and updates the installation accordingly.

If you uninstall (via the Control Panel or Start programs) the add-in is removed from the registry and the FastFinderCommons.dll is deleted from the SE program directory.

If the database is to be deleted, you can previously perform the deletion with FFprep.

Silent installation

The Setup program accepts optional command line parameters. These can be useful to system administrators, and to other programs calling the Setup program.
/HELP, /?
Shows a summary of this information.
Instructs Setup to be silent or very silent. When Setup is silent the wizard and the background window are not displayed but the installation progress window is. When a setup is very silent this installation progress window is not displayed.
/TASKS="comma separated list of task names"
Specifies a list of tasks that should be initially selected.
Possible tasknames are:

  • notViewer: if you install a SolidEdge workstation, check this. Don't check for Viewer place.
  • unregister: If FastFinder is already installed, you should check this task.
  • DesktopIcon: the icon for FFViewer is created on the desktop
  • WithFFPrep: the icon for FFPrep is created in programlist
  • WithDebug: additional icons in programlist to start FFPrep and/or FFViewer in debug mode.

e.g .:FF- /verysilent /tasks="notViewer,DesktopIcon,WithFFPrep"

SQL authentication

Typically FastFinder uses the Windows authentication. However, it is also possible to work with the SQL authentication:
With SQL Server Management Studio Micrososoft or equivalent program switch to mixed mode (server / properties / security).
Create an administrative SQL User with the same name as the Windows user and set the password identical to the username (Note upper / lower case) and give the user the role "sysadmin" (Server/Security/applications).
Invest in the Registry under HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Computer CF/FastFinder and create two new strings or change them:
1. SQLAuthenticate with the value: sql
2. Servername with the value: <computer name>\<SQL instance name>.
Hint: Export these entries and reimport them on each workplace).
Create or copy the other users with FFPrep/Configure.
The entry under domain must be empty.
The user name must be the same as used in Windows login.\\
